In June 2001, Rod teamed up with fellow Canadian adventurer and longtime friend, Scott McFarlane, and embarked on a 3700km adventure down the Mississippi River. While not truly a zero emissions journey (2900km were completed using a motor-powered pontoon boat), the pair did manage to paddle an 18 foot canoe 800km from the Mississippi’s source at Lake Itasca in northern Minnesota to the twin cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul. Three weeks later they arrived at the Gulf of Mexico.

One of Rod’s favourite journeys, the story of the Mississippi River adventure comprises the centerpiece of Part-Time Superheroes, Full-Time Friends, a full-length novel that features fascinating tales from the river and respectfully details the power of true friendship. Release date: spring 2015.
